Hardware Decommissioning

Computers, hard drives, and other end-of-life technical devices which store data are decommissioned by UBC IT. Equipment is re-purposed or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner, and appropriate security measures are taken prior to re-purposing/disposal, including hard drive reformatting.

For disposal of electronic equipment without data storage, an eWaste Bin has been provided in the Scarfe basement (by the main staircase – classroom block).

The most common items that can be disposed in the eWaste bin include:

  • Computer Terminals & Computer Parts
  • Desktop Computers
  • Laptops & Tablets
  • Keyboards & Mice
  • Monitors
  • Printers
  • Zip drives & External Hard Drives

This service is available for devices owned by departments or units in the Faculty of Education.
